The Inspiration Project Continues!

Members of the Community Leadership Class are continuing their work on the Inspiration Project (see previous work here, here and and now here ). The Inspiration Project is a student driven and produced effort to share news, ideas and stories about young people doing things that inspire, motivate, and move other young people.

These three short films are interviews that Project team members conducted with members of the Kurt Hahn student body who team members felt had achieved great things, showed outstanding character and strength in the 5 Commitments or were simply awesome. Team members are growing in their skill set to create, film and edit these stories so while there are still a lot of things to refine hopefully you'll higher production value than previous posts. Take a look!

Alumni Return!

Over the course of January, we had several Alumni return to Kurt Hahn to share their stories of life post graduation. Many helped out with our Explore Week and were able to come in and speak to current students about what they are learning in their first semesters in college. Posted below is the first of the raw footage. The Community Leadership class will begin editing the collection of interviews and posting more in the next few weeks as part of their work on the Inspiration Project.

For those that can't sit through the 4 minutes of the video, the take aways:

Student Led Conferences are great preparation for public speaking that you'll take advantage of in your college courses.
Don't complain about the writing your teachers are making you do. In fact, ask them for more - you'll need to be stronger in this as you start college.
Get in the habit of doing work on time. Large freshman college courses don't always take late work.
Crew is awesome and you'll miss it when you don't have it. Find your own crew in college if you can.

I had a great time up in the Catskills today, visiting 4 of the 5 crews. There is snow on the ground, but the weather is warming and the snow is melting. Everyone is in good spirits and accomplishing more than they ever thought possible - backpacking, ropes course, cooking, map reading, making incredible strides as crews and individuals. Tilden Campus had a fantastic Homecoming this Saturday, October 15th. The Blue Devils won their game, beating Columbus Campus by a wide margin. The newly formed Tilden Campus Cheerleaders also impressed with well timed performances and dances. Kurt Hahn welcoming back several alumni, among them Mykens Hilaire, Nick Hinds and Emeric Jeffreys. Additionally, dozens of students participated in a fundraising Fight Cancer walk before the game. Take a look at some of the snapshots below and congratulations to all!

Jeff Raikes, CEO of the Gates Foundation, visits Kurt Hahn

Last week, Kurt Hahn was honored to host Jeff Raikes, CEO of the Gates Foundation. Mr. Raikes was here to examine the work of the Teacher Effectiveness Pilot Project, a program to support teachers in strengthening practice and student performance. He met with panels of principals and teachers, hearing about what they have learned from their work trying to define just what good teaching is and how to measure it. He also had the chance to visit 2 classrooms and speak with students.

The Gates Foundation was an early supporter of our school, providing grant monies to our partner New York City Outward Bound which were used to support teacher training and school start up costs. It was a great visit!

The 2011 2012 school year has gotten off to a bang here at Kurt Hahn. We've welcomed 5 new staff members and 80 new 9th graders. The energy is great - teachers are ready, students are ready, and the school is as dynamic as it has ever been. This year, our school is focused intensely on continuing to build a strong and respectful school culture and ensuring that all students are engaged in rigorous argumentative writing in preparing quality products for their SLCs. We have many, many things that come into play in addressing these. However, we are committed to staying focused on these two areas to drive our work.

Much of my blog this year will be dedicated to documenting progress on these two areas. As usual, of course, it will also be a place to promote the great work of our students and events of our school. To start, some images from the first few days of school.

AIDS Walk NYC and Kurt Hahn

About 40 students spent a rainy Sunday walking to raise funds for AIDS research and supporting programs. Our crew was organized by Ms. Lustick and Ms. Osborne, who insured that students understood the critical nature of this action both globally and for their community. Kurt Hahn students need to earn civic leadership hours to graduate and this was a great way to earn several of those hours!!!!

Not in My Hood March and Resource Fair

Today, East Flatbush Village, Council Member Jumaane Williams, Kurt Hahn, and several other community and educational organizations partnered to sponsor the Not in My Hoold March and Resource Fair. This action brought about 500 participants from Paerdegat Park to Tilden campus, rasing noise and awareness about the need to confront growing violence in the communities along the way. Film Collective vistis New Design High School

Our fantastic film collective visited New Design High School to screen their film (the Violence Movie) and take questions from an audience from that school's senior media class. The KH students answered inquiries about how they came up with the subject matter, edited the film, and collaborated over such a long stretch (the film took 7 months to create).

Craig Wallace, a Kurt Hahn student and a photographer, shared these reflections about his work.

"I started early senior year, my father likes to do it in his spare time as a hobby. I use it as a way to express myself. I just went outside and took photos of thinks that were interesting and bold. I've seen tons of photos in my life, how simple they are and they just look cool. So I was trying to do the same thing with these photos. Photography was the work I pursued for my senior exhibition. You can't just be a photographer by picking up a camera. You have to study it, to shoot manual, change the settings each time. Most just shoot automatic. You need to take pictures of what you feel, if it looks cool then just go for it."

The latest Film Collective Work - the Violence Project

Many times recently we've profiled the work of the Film Collective on this site. Today's entry continues this streak with the posting of their latest video on Violence. It takes a hard look at the impact of violence on adolescent lives in Brooklyn as well as on the simple choices students have to make every day as to what this impact will be. The Collective is screening this film at schools around the city and using this work to promote discussion and action on the topic. For those that have been following the work of this group, you notice a higher production value and more sophisticated narrative structure than their previous films. The students are making great progress and the quality of the film shows it!

Here at Kurt Hahn we believe that all students need to engage with the community beyond their own lives and families. We are in the business of shaping leaders who have a civic mission and with that, we provide numerous opportunities for students to serve others both in school in out. Perhaps our strongest evidence of this is the New York Cares Youth Service Club, an organization founded and directed at our school by Mr. Maciejewski. This group takes on monthly projects and does a fantastic job of helping Kurt Hahn students live the adage that to be more, you 've got to do more.

Kurt Hahn Film Club visits Canarsie Campus to screen Violence Film!

Students from the Kurt Hahn Film Club visited the Canarsie Campus on Friday. They screened the rough cut of their short film, "Violence", which examines the role of violence in the lives of today's teenagers. The students took questions and comments from the audience. Much of the feedback came from members of the Canarsie Campus arts program and will hopefully provide direction and suggestions for refining the film. Fatimah teaches Robin Quivers about healthy eating

Fatimah Basir has become quite the star of late. Her initial work here with our own Teen Iron Chef competitions has led to out of school opportunities working with groups promoting healthy eating habits and lifestyles. This video is from one of those opportunities, where Fatimah can be shown speaking with Robin Quivers of the Howard Stern show about how to create fresh and healthy meals.

One of the more exciting developments this year has been the birth of a Kurt Hahn School based Mentoring Program for young men, called the Brotherhood. This group has been started by 12th grade boys who wish to share their experiences with younger students and help guide them to success at Kurt Hahn. 12th grade civic students meet Senate Candidate John Clifton

12th grade students met Senate candidate John Clifton today and had a chance to ask him a range of questions about his platform and party. The Libertarian candidate spoke for about 20 minutes on his stance on a range of issues, from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to gun control, taxes and individual rights. Students engaged with him, questioning fact and opinion and getting a much closer look at the political process than they ever had! If you see a 12th grade Kurt Hahn student today, as them about it!

Our first graduating class had their second senior meeting yesterday. Essential information was given out regarding the importance of this year in preparing for college and the necessity for seniors and their families to keep up with the application process. Students should have registered to take the SAT in a fall administration, be continuing to explore college options with their crew leaders, counselor, and families, and lining up people to write letters of recommendation. We are all in this together!!!!

Hello all - we are a bit over a week away from the start of school and things are humming along at Kurt Hahn. We've had a busy summer getting ready for the beginnings of our 4th year. Hopefully, the students are excited as we are about the start of the year.

One area all students should be thinking about is how they will complete their Civic Leadership Hours. These 50 community service hours are a graduation requirement for all students and a great opportunity to both give back to our community as well as grow in the experience of learning and leading outside the classroom.

Your crew teacher has a whole range of suggestions for you about getting these hours, both in and out of school, so please ask! Let's be sure that Kurt Hahn students are leading in service to others both in and out of school!!!

Ghetto Talks, the documentary film that Kurt Hahn students collaborated on with several other high school students under the leadership of Urban Arts Partnership, was shown at the Tribeca Film Festival recently to glowing reviews. In Mr. Bolduc's Spanish class, students learned about the rules regulating the use of the verb 'gustar' meaning 'to like' by listening to the song "Me gustas tu" by Manu Chao. Looking at results from our latest student survey, Mr. Bolduc's crew members decided they wanted to investigate the data, which revealed that many students did not report that students respect each other. The issue of respect - what it means, who gives it, who gets it, what it is worth - lives large in the life of any school. Crew Olympics!

As veteran readers know, this is the time of year that the famous Kurt Hahn School Crew Olympics. This is a two week test of a the leadership and teamwork capacities of each crew and is one of the hallmarks of our school. Each student has the chance to really step up and show the leadership skills he or she has learned in the past year and lead their crew to glory and possession of the CREW CUP (plus really cool t-shirts).

Reflections on Meditation at Kurt Hahn

At Kurt Hahn, we are fortunate to have a weekly meditation session led by experts from Sahaja Meditation. Sarah Fishstrom, our Health Corps Coordinator, and Eric Mendelson, our Dean and Art/Tech Coordinator, meet once a week with up to 20 students who are interested in the clarifying and calming effects meditation can bring. Many report that these sessions are having positive effects on their lives both in school and at home. Listen as Trevor, a 9th grade participant, shares his perspective.

For students who wish to participate, come to Mr. Mendelson's room on Fridays at 7:30 - it is open to all!

Socratic Seminar in Action

In the 1st year Global Studies classrooms, students have been debating the relative legacies and leadership of ancient empires. Their research has culminated in a Socratic Seminar - a group debate where students challenge each other's assertions and assumptions about which leader led best, and which empire left us the most. These were extremely successful - as we figure out how to get more of the footage up on the site we'll do so (the files are extremely large due to the length of the seminar).

Student Film Night A Great Success!

Dozens of parents, students, teachers and guests were treated to a night of fun and thought provoking film Tuesday night. The school screened three films: Ghetto Talks; an exploration into the origins, use and abuse of the word Ghetto; Student Cell Phones, a documentary about student cell phone use that raises questions about if they should be allowed to have them in school and introduces the controversial idea of "Don't Show, Don't tell" as a new policy; and The Lunchroom, another short documentary that ask students their feelings about school food and what life could be like in the school cafeteria.

Each of these films was conceived, written and directed by students from Kurt Hahn through collaboration with Urban Arts Partnership (and in the case of Ghetto Talks, students from other NYC high schools as well). The screenings will continue throughout the spring,

Come to see the Screening of Kurt Hahn Films!!!!

On Tuesday, February 9th at 7:00 , we will be hosting a screening with our arts partner, UAP, of 3 short films. Each of these films has been concieved, written, directed and edited by Kurt Hahn School students in partnership with students from other NYC high schools.

The center piece is a 13 minute documentary that asks hard questions about our casual use of the word, "ghetto" and what it means for our communities. This documentary has already been accepted into one film festival - The New York Indpendent Film and Video Festival - and submitted to many others.

Two other films will be shown, each on an issue of critical importance to student life - school food and cell phones. Please come out and support our students and enjoy these great films!

What to ask a Spanish 3 student?

This post comes from Ms. Sealy, who gives an idea to families about what to check in about with Spanish students:

"My Spanish class is working towards being able to write a paragraph about themselves and their families to an e/pen-pal in a Spanish speaking country. Parents can ask them about any vocabulary for descriptions of students' looks and personality, and by next week of family members. Eventually they will be able to ask and answer many "personal identification" questions and complete immigration forms and luggage tags needed for travel."

If you live with a Spanish student, ask them how they are doing in getting ready to write their pen pal!
